What was the global climatic effect of the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Phillipines in 1991?

The Pinatubo eruption ejected enough gas and ash into the atmosphere to reduce surface temperatures by about 0.5 degrees Celsius over the two years following the eruption. Its overall effect was one of global cooling, not warming.
